Andrew Jenner Wins Short Paper Competition
Graduate Engineer, Andrew Jenner, won the Pipeline Industries Guild Short Paper Competition 2010 with his presentation entitled Innovation in the Field of Effluent Pipelines. Since achieving an engineering degree at Loughborough University, Andrew has successfully completed a 2-year graduate training course with Radius Systems.
The annual competition, which was held on 13 April at United Utilities, invites young engineers to present a paper on a subject relevant to Pipeline Technology. Entrants must be under 35 years old and are judged by four senior members of the Guild on four areas: presentation skills, timekeeping, technical competence and response to Q&A. This year's event was oversubscribed and was limited to 8 entrants and attracted over 30 guild members.
Andrew's winning presentation discussed the importance of innovation in any company's bid for success over its competitors. The presentation explained how we used innovation to great effect in the sewage industry to develop our unique UltraFortis product range. He went on to discuss how we are bringing in new design and prototyping techniques that allow us to work closely with our customers to offer optimised design solutions and improved efficiencies, shortening the time from drawing board to working prototype to a matter of days in some cases.
Andrew said of the competition: "This is a great event for young engineers like me to increase our profile and learn a little more about the other companies in our industry. The standard of presentations was very high on the day, making the win even more unexpected! The trophy has pride of place on my windowsill and I am looking forward to attending the Annual Dinner in November".
In addition to receiving the trophy, Andrew wins £250 and two tickets with accommodation to the Northern Branch Annual Dinner at Harrogate.
Other presentations were received from AESL, GL Noble Denton, Radius Systems, United Utilities and Northumbrian Water, making it a tough competition. Congratulations to Andrew for an outstanding presentation and a well deserved win.
