United Utilities Uses UPlus Expertise
The challenge was that the high point of the new polyethylene (PE) pipeline -- near Huyton, Liverpool -- required the installation of a new air valve. However, in close proximity to the location was an existing 18-inch medium pressure gas main. Space was at a premium and the increased excavation area needed to install a metallic tee would have meant diverting the gas main.
Using a bespoke welded 'top-saddle' 1000mm x 150mm flanged outlet designed and manufactured to order, UPlus was able to work within a 3m x 3m excavation. The total savings achieved by installing the branch saddle were estimated to be tens of thousands of pounds. The additional benefit was the reduced number of joints needed within the pipeline.
United Utilities design manager Matt Lomax commented: "This may well be a first of its kind at this size, and we were very impressed with the work done by UPlus. This was a tailor-made fitting and it was successfully installed in just a few hours."
